Torre di San Gregorio

Salento, San Gregorio - Patú: The Tower of San Gregorio no longer exists today; this coastal tower that gave its name to the seaside resort located in the municipality of Patù, in the region of Puglia, in the province of Lecce was built in the 16th century, during the period of Spanish rule, to defend the coast from the raids of Saracen pirates; following an unspecified invasion the tower was almost completely destroyed, and in its place was later built a villa that is still visible today, which rises from Cape San Gregorio, among tall palm trees and a lush pine forest. Torre San Gregorio communicated to the south with Torre Marchiello while to the north with Torre Vado.
