The beautiful city

The name Gallipoli is traditionally linked to the Greek Kale Polis, meaning beautiful city. Its position on the sea supported harbour and trading activities over the centuries.

The historic centre preserves churches, courtyards, palaces and walls overlooking the sea, while the modern town developed on the mainland.

From Purità to Baia Verde

At the foot of the old town walls lies Spiaggia della Purità, a small free beach in the heart of the city.

Heading south you encounter the seafront, Lido San Giovanni and Baia Verde, with sandy beaches, generally shallow water, free stretches and beach establishments.

Castle, harbour and natural landscape

Gallipoli Castle stands at the entrance to the historic centre and is almost entirely surrounded by the sea.

Farther south the territory includes the Isola di Sant’Andrea and Punta Pizzo Coast Regional Natural Park.
