Malva Rock

Malva Rock is a small outcrop off Torre Chianca, distinct from the nearby Isola della Malva. The area has landscape and archaeological value and is subject to a specific navigation restriction.

Malva Rock: What to know before you go

Checked practical information on access, sea conditions, services and safety. Since 2023 the sailing directions have recorded a permanent navigation restriction within 150 m of Malva Rock. The heritage authority has also documented archaeological evidence on the rock and by the free beach at Torre Chianca.

Getting there and access

The rock can be viewed from the Torre Chianca shore. We do not recommend kayaks, pedal boats or other craft to reach it: the Italian Hydrographic Institute states that a 150 m area is closed year-round to transit, stopping, mooring and anchoring by any vessel, including beach craft.

Access

If an access point is closed or altered, do not improvise shortcuts: use authorised routes only.

Sea, coast and seabed

The surrounding sea is part of the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area. Shallow sandy seabed can alternate with rocks and marine vegetation; do not confuse the rock with the Greco-Roman columns site in the Torre Chianca sector.

Before moving away from shore, identify a safe exit point and do not enter if waves or current exceed your ability.

With small children, choose only spots away from manoeuvring areas and with an easy entry; supervision and sea conditions remain essential.

Parking and services

For a land-based visit, use permitted access and parking areas around Torre Chianca. There are no services on the rock; bars, toilets and refreshments are on the mainland and at nearby facilities.

Do not leave valuables visible in the car and do not occupy verges, access points or unauthorised spaces.

Accessibility

Uneven natural rock means it cannot be described as wheelchair-accessible or suitable for people with reduced mobility.

The published restriction concerns vessels. We do not automatically extend it to swimmers, but swimming out remains an activity requiring great caution and assessment of sea, wind, currents, traffic and current local rules.
