The beach and seabed

Torre Lapillo beach is one of the longest sandy stretches in the Porto Cesareo area. The sand is pale and fine; the seabed is mainly shallow and sandy, with smooth pebbles and short rocky sections in some places.

Along the bay, beach establishments alternate with free beach. Sea conditions depend on wind and storms; with northerly winds it can be particularly calm and clear.

Torre di San Tommaso

The Torre Lapillo tower is also known as Torre di San Tommaso. The Municipality describes it as one of the largest towers in the area, with a square base measuring 16 metres on each side and a height of 17 metres.

Its large staircase rests on three arches. The final section was added in more recent times, because the original entrance ended with a drawbridge. The tower has been restored and dominates the southern end of the bay.

Nature reserve and Marine Protected Area

The tower houses the Environmental Education Centre linked to the Palude del Conte e Duna Costiera Regional Nature Reserve. The reserve protects a mosaic of dunes, wetlands, Mediterranean scrub and coastal environments.

The sea in front forms part of the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area, divided into zones with different levels of protection and permitted use. Swimming and activities at sea must follow the zoning and rules of the protected area.
