Where Punta Prosciutto is
Punta Prosciutto lies within the Municipality of Porto Cesareo, in the Province of Lecce, close to the border with the Province of Taranto. Heading north you reach Torre Colimena, while to the south the coast continues towards Torre Castiglione and Torre Lapillo.
Beach, dunes and seabed
Institutional sources describe a long beach that is mainly free to access, with some beach clubs. The sand is pale and soft and the water is generally shallow and clear. Behind the beach, dunes and Mediterranean vegetation form a central part of the landscape.
The sandy seabed generally slopes gradually. Sea conditions still depend on wind and weather, and the resort can become very busy during peak periods.
Nature reserve and environmental protection
The coastline is part of the Palude del Conte e Duna Costiera Regional Nature Reserve, established in 2006 and lying entirely within the Municipality of Porto Cesareo. The reserve includes the Palude del Conte – Dune di Punta Prosciutto site, code IT9150027.
Punta Prosciutto also marks the northern boundary of the Porto Cesareo Marine Protected Area, which continues south along the coasts of the municipalities of Porto Cesareo and Nardò.
