Grotta Grande del Ciolo

A large sea cave in the cliffs south of Ciolo, also known as Bocca del Pozzo and noted for a small inner pool: impressive to see, but not a place for improvised cliff access or a long independent swim.

Grotta Grande del Ciolo: what to know before you go

This update keeps the character of the old guide but removes the riskiest advice: we no longer recommend swimming to the cave or using a drainage channel from the coastal road. Official Ciolo trails are separate from access to the marine cavity.

Sea cave, not a beach

Grotta Grande del Ciolo, also known as Bocca del Pozzo, is a sea cave in the cliffs of Gagliano del Capo, south of Ciolo cove. It is not a conventional beach or sea-entry point.

Good to know

Plan it as a coastal experience, not a serviced beach day.

South of Ciolo cove

Historic cave records place it around 39.836944, 18.384444, along the cliffs south of Ponte del Ciolo rather than inside the small cove under the bridge.

Orientation

Do not confuse it with caves visible directly inside the Ciolo gorge.

Bocca del Pozzo and its small inner pool

A University of Salento travel guide mentions Bocca del Pozzo for its small light-blue inner basin, one of the cave’s characteristic features.

Changing light

Colour and reflections vary with sun and sea conditions.

For visitors, approach by boat

The old page recommended swimming to the cave. We no longer do: distance, cliffs and sea conditions make a knowledgeable boat operator the more prudent option.

Before you go

Ask whether the route specifically includes Bocca del Pozzo and whether conditions allow a safe approach.

The drainage channel is not a visitor route

The old description also suggested descending from the coastal road through a drainage channel. Official Ciolo trail sources do not present it as a tourist route to the cave.

Safer choice

Do not use drainage channels, cliff faces or off-trail passages to reach the cavity.

Official trails are a separate experience

The municipality and Regional Park document the Ciolo trail, Canalone del Ciolo and other cliff routes. These are hiking and scenic trails, not certified entrances into Grotta Grande.

On foot

Stay on the official trail network if exploring the area from land.

Sea cave conditions require caution

Waves, wind, backwash and boat traffic can quickly change approach conditions. Entering a marine cave independently adds risk.

Simple rule

Follow the skipper’s instructions and do not improvise a swim to the cave.

With children: choose a suitable boat tour

The cave can be interesting to view from the sea, but there is no beach, shallow seabed or land resting area.

With young children

Check minimum age, life jackets, boarding and trip duration.

No universal cave access verified

There is no documented tourist footpath into the cave. Sea viewing depends entirely on the vessel and boarding point.

Reduced mobility

Contact the boat operator before booking.

Parking: use the Ciolo area as your land base

For the cove and trails, use legal parking near Ponte del Ciolo and local roads. Parking does not lead directly to Grotta Grande.

In summer

Arrive early and use only permitted spaces.

What to bring

For a boat trip: water, sun protection, hat, waterproof phone case and a light layer against wind and spray. For trails: closed shoes with good grip.

Essential

No climbing equipment is needed if you stay on proper visitor routes.

Where Grotta Grande del Ciolo is

The pin is on the cliffs south of Ciolo cove at 39.836944, 18.384444. It is for orientation and does not mark an authorised walking entrance.

Coordinates: 39.836944, 18.384444

The broad marine entrance and reflections around the small inner basin are characteristic of Bocca del Pozzo.
