Roca Vecchia Castle ruins: What to know before you go
Checked practical information on access, sea conditions, services and safety. Since July 2026, the Municipality of Melendugno and a private partner have launched a new management and enhancement scheme for Roca Vecchia and the Grotte della Poesia. The page therefore no longer treats the area as ruins that can simply be crossed freely.
Getting there and access
Reach the area from the SP366 and the archaeological-site entrance. Since July 2026, visits are organised through the ArcheoRoca project: follow ticketing, marked routes and staff instructions and do not enter excavation areas or cross barriers.
Access
If an access point is closed or altered, do not improvise shortcuts: use authorised routes only.
Sea, coast and seabed
This is a historical-archaeological page, not a beach. Roca’s coast is rocky with coves and caves, but sea access must be kept separate from the Castle visit route and protected archaeological areas.
Sea
Before moving away from shore, identify a safe exit point and do not enter if waves or current exceed your ability.
Families and children
Highly suitable for archaeology, history, scenery and cultural visits. It can work for families interested in history if children stay on the routes; it is not a beach-day destination.
Families
Before planning the day, consider access, distance from services, crowding and how easy it will be to get back.
Parking and services
Since July 2026, ArcheoRoca lists a €5 standard ticket and continuous summer opening; hours and prices can change after the season, so check the official site before visiting.
Planning
Do not leave valuables visible in the car and do not occupy verges, access points or unauthorised spaces.
Accessibility
The site is mainly viewed from outside and along walking routes. Ground can be uneven, and we found no certification allowing the whole route to be described as barrier-free.
Accessibility
If you have specific mobility needs, check before leaving whether the route is genuinely usable that day.
Wind and sea conditions
Do not climb walls, move stones or cross barriers. The site is exposed to sun and wind and has uneven archaeological ground, so always follow the visitor route.
Safety
If the wind strengthens, reassess your return before conditions worsen.
What has changed / rules to check
Since July 2026, the Municipality of Melendugno and a private partner have launched a new management and enhancement scheme for Roca Vecchia and the Grotte della Poesia. The page therefore no longer treats the area as ruins that can simply be crossed freely.
Update
If signs or barriers on site are more restrictive than this guide, the instructions on site always take precedence.
Who it suits
Highly suitable for archaeology, history, scenery and cultural visits. It can work for families interested in history if children stay on the routes; it is not a beach-day destination.

Before deciding, pay particular attention to the access and safety cards, as they can completely change the experience.
