A massive sixteenth-century coastal tower overlooking Baia delle Orte, best treated as a historic and scenic landmark to be viewed while respecting paths and private property.

Torre dell’Orte is a historic structure on the headland above Baia delle Orte, about 100 metres from the sea and around 35 metres above sea level.
Treat it as a historic and scenic stop; use separate coastal pages for swimming access.
Historical sources name local builders involved in the work and record the tower as still under construction in 1608.
It belonged to the coastal defence and surveillance system around Otranto.
Unlike many coastal towers, it has a low, massive quadrangular body, roughly 16 metres per side, built in local carparo stone.
Its form has led some specialists to interpret it as more than a simple lookout tower.
Its position allowed visual communication northwards with Torre del Serpe and southwards with Torre Palascia, which no longer survives.
The Orte area makes the logic of the historical watchtower network easy to understand.
After its defensive role ended, the tower was incorporated into the farm complex and used as a store.
It shows how a military structure became part of the rural landscape.
Sources list the ruin as privately owned. We found no confirmation of regular public interior access.
View it from permitted routes and do not cross gates, fences or private land.
The Regional Park documents the Orte-Cape Otranto trail through the landscape around Otranto, Masseria delle Orte, the bay and the bauxite quarry.
Stay on existing routes and judge heat, surface and wind before setting out.
We do not list a dedicated public car park for the tower. Parking around Otranto is regulated and should be checked locally.
Do not enter private land or unauthorised tracks to get closer.
We found no certified accessible route all the way to the tower. Tracks and natural ground may be difficult for reduced mobility.
Think of it as a scenic walk rather than an urban monument with equipped entrance.
Comfortable shoes, water, hat, sun protection and a charged phone. Binoculars or a camera are useful for viewing from a respectful distance.
Morning or late afternoon is more comfortable.
