Torre Specchiolla

A 16th-century coastal tower just metres from the Adriatic, in the Squinzano section of Casalabate. It is best treated as a historic landmark to view from outside: sources identify it as privately owned and currently closed to the public.

Torre Specchiolla: what to know before you go

The old page provides a useful historical starting point, but today the tower should not be presented as a freely accessible monument. The visit is mainly external and works well as part of a walk along Casalabate’s seafront.

Coastal tower, not an equipped beach

Torre Specchiolla stands on Via Lungomare Nord, in the northern part of Casalabate within the municipality of Squinzano. The sea is only a few metres away, but this guide is primarily about the monument and its coastal setting.

Good to know

For a beach day, choose one of Casalabate’s sea-access points; the tower is a historical stop to view from outside.

Construction documented between 1582 and 1584

A specialist source cites an act dated 19 August 1582 assigning construction to Mario Schero of Lecce and a document of 15 February 1584 concerning the already completed and approved work.

Defensive network

It formed part of the coastal watchtower system protecting Terra d’Otranto from raids and landings.

Visual contact with neighbouring towers

Torre Specchiolla communicated southwards with Torre Rinalda and northwards with Torre San Gennaro, which no longer survives. Its position close to the sea supported surveillance of the coastline.

Continue south

Torre Rinalda remains a useful next historic stop along the coast.

Square base about 11 metres per side

The tower is described as a typical tower of the Kingdom, with a square base, battered walls and twelve machicolations, three per side. The ground floor originally served as a cistern and the upper level as the habitable room.

Restoration

Much of the upper section was reconstructed, so not everything visible today is original fabric.

Private property and currently closed to the public

The specialist source identifies the tower as privately owned, while FAI currently lists it as closed to the public. Access to the interior or upper terrace should therefore not be promised.

Practical rule

View it from public spaces and do not cross gates, fences or private entrances.

Adriatic setting in Casalabate

Casalabate is an Adriatic seaside locality shared between Trepuzzi to the south and Squinzano to the north. Around the tower the landscape includes low coast and bathing areas; sea conditions can change quickly with wind and waves.

Swimming

Check the entry point on the day and use rock shoes where the shore is rough or uneven.

A useful historical stop with children

The tower is easy to include in a seafront walk, but it has no confirmed public interior route or dedicated visitor services. For swimming with children, choose a simpler sea access and supervise closely.

With young children

Treat the tower visit separately from choosing the safest and easiest place to enter the water.

Approach via Via Lungomare Nord

FAI places the tower on Via Lungomare Nord. We found no official car park dedicated solely to the monument, so use permitted local parking spaces and follow signs.

Busy periods

Do not assume a space will be available beside the tower; arriving earlier can help in summer.

No verified accessible interior route

Because the tower is listed as closed to the public, there is no visitor interior route to assess as accessible. Outdoor usability depends on the exact seafront section and surface conditions.

Reduced mobility

Check the specific stretch of promenade and any intended sea access before travelling.

What to bring

Comfortable walking shoes, water, a hat, sun protection and a charged phone. If you combine the visit with a swim, add suitable water shoes and a mask depending on the access point.

Best for

Visitors interested in coastal history, photography, seaside walks and Salento’s watchtower landscape.
