The natural park
The Municipality of Nardò recalls the establishment of the protected area in 1980 and the presence of a large pine forest created through reforestation work begun in the 20th century.
Regional law in 2006 established the Porto Selvaggio e Palude del Capitano Regional Natural Park, protecting a system of coastal habitats, woodland, wetlands and sites of Community interest.
Bays, caves and paths
The main bay is reached on foot through the pine forest. Along the coast are cliffs, small inlets and many caves, some accessible only from the sea and only in suitable conditions.
The coastline is natural and not uniformly equipped, so suitable footwear, water, sun protection and attention to sea conditions are important.
Towers and archaeology
The tower system includes Torre Inserraglio, Torre Uluzzo and Torre dell’Alto. Torre dell’Alto was completed in the 16th century and stands about fifty metres above the cliff south of the bay.
The caves and coastal sites have produced important archaeological and palaeontological evidence, making Porto Selvaggio valuable for more than its natural landscape alone.
