Grotta delle Streghe

Also known as Grotta delle Striare, this cave on the Santa Cesarea Terme coast brings together local folklore and Pleistocene geology above the Adriatic.

Grotta delle Streghe: what to know before you go

The old page associated the cave with Castro and focused mostly on the legend. Regional and scientific sources now allow us to correct the location, separate folklore from geology and give safer visiting advice.

Coastal cave, not a beach

Grotta delle Streghe, also called Grotta delle Striare, is a cave in the high rocky coast of Santa Cesarea Terme. It is neither a sandy beach nor a conventional equipped bathing spot.

Good to know

Treat it primarily as a natural, geological and scenic site.

The old archive associated it with Castro

The historic Salentissimo archive filed the cave under Castro, but the official regional tourism portal places Grotta delle Striare on the coast of Santa Cesarea Terme. We retain the old filename only so the legacy ASP page can redirect correctly.

Geographic correction

For navigation we use Santa Cesarea Terme, between Porto Miggiano and Porto Badisco.

For visitors, approaching from the sea is the safer option

We found no institutional source documenting a normal public walking route into the cave. To see it safely, an organised sea excursion is preferable to improvised descents on the cliff.

Before you go

Ask the operator whether the trip passes Grotta delle Striare and whether conditions allow a close approach that day.

A site documented in scientific literature

The WALIS/ESSD scientific database records Grotta delle Striare as a Late Pleistocene sea-level indicator, with a fossil tidal notch attributed to MIS 5. Its interest is therefore geological as well as scenic.

Understand the site

The rock forms preserve evidence of former sea levels; do not remove or damage geological material.

The “striare” belong to local folklore

The name refers to “striare”, witches in local storytelling. The official regional tourism portal presents this as legend and popular fascination surrounding the cave, not as a verified historical event.

Legend, not fact

Enjoy the story as part of Salento oral culture while keeping it separate from scientific evidence.

Sea and wind determine the visit

On this rocky coast, waves, wind and navigation safety determine whether a boat can approach. A tour may change route or skip the cave.

Pick the right day

Always follow the skipper or guide.

Snorkelling only in suitable conditions

The sea is deep and striking, but the cave should not be treated as an independent swimming target. Any swim or snorkel stop should be part of a safe organised outing and follow the guide’s instructions.

Safer choice

Do not set off from shore to reach the cave by swimming and do not enter without understanding sea and boat traffic conditions.

With children: choose an appropriate excursion

It can be interesting for families, but there is no beach, shallow water or comfortable land space. The vessel and length of the trip matter most.

With young children

Ask about recommended ages, lifejackets, boarding arrangements and shelter from spray.

Accessibility must be checked with the operator

We found no universally accessible public land route into the cave. For reduced mobility, feasibility depends on departure harbour, vessel and assistance.

Check first

Contact the operator directly before booking.

Parking depends on the boarding point

The cave has no parking of its own. If visiting by sea, park at the departure point given by the operator, which may be Castro, Porto Miggiano or another authorised harbour.

Avoid fixed assumptions

We do not publish a single parking fee or location because departure points and parking rules can change.

What to bring

Water, sun protection, a hat, waterproof phone pouch and a light layer against wind and spray. Bring mask and swimwear only if the trip explicitly includes a swimming stop.

Essential

Non-slip footwear is useful on board; beach equipment is unnecessary for a cave with no beach.

Where Grotta delle Streghe (Grotta delle Striare) is

The pin uses 40.046433, 18.476133, the coordinates reported for Grotta delle Striare in the WALIS/ESSD scientific database. The point lies on the Santa Cesarea Terme coast, not in central Castro.

Coordinates: 40.046433, 18.476133

The cave and cliff change with light and sea conditions; images should be read as landscape documentation, without confusing natural forms with folklore.

Frequently asked questions about Grotta delle Streghe

Essential answers on location, the name “Striare”, folklore, geology, access, excursions and safety.

Where is Grotta delle Streghe actually located?
Regional sources place it on the coast of Santa Cesarea Terme. The old Salentissimo page associated it with Castro, but the new page corrects the parent resort.
Why does the filename still contain “castro”?
For technical continuity with the old grotta-delle-streghe-castro.asp page and its 301 redirect. Editorial location and navigation are corrected to Santa Cesarea Terme.
Are Grotta delle Streghe and Grotta delle Striare the same place?
Yes. The regional tourism portal uses Grotta delle Striare; the Salentissimo archive historically called it Grotta delle Streghe.
What does “striare” mean?
In local storytelling and tourism interpretation it refers to witches. This is folklore, not evidence of supernatural events.
Is the witches story a historical fact?
No. It should be presented as popular tradition linked to the cave’s name and atmosphere, separate from geographic and scientific evidence.
Why is the cave geologically important?
The WALIS/ESSD scientific database records an ancient sea-level indicator at Grotta delle Striare attributed to MIS 5, with the fossil feature around 8.2 metres elevation.
Can I reach the cave on foot?
We found no institutional source documenting a normal public visitor route into the cave. We do not recommend improvised cliff descents.
What is the safest way to see it?
Use an organised sea excursion and ask whether the itinerary includes Grotta delle Striare and whether conditions allow an approach that day.
Can I swim to it?
We do not recommend this: the coast is rocky, water can be deep, and waves, currents and boat traffic must be considered.
Is it suitable for children?
It can be on a suitable boat and age-appropriate tour. Ask the operator about safety equipment and boarding.
Is it accessible for reduced mobility?
It depends on the vessel, harbour and available assistance. We found no official universal-access guarantee.
Where can I park?
At the departure point for your excursion. The cave has no parking of its own and boarding points vary by operator.
