Punta Sapone at Roca Vecchia, Melendugno
Puglia · Salento · Adriatic Sea · Melendugno

Punta Sapone

A compact sea access on the Roca Vecchia coast, mainly rocky but with small sandy pockets that may change after storms: clear water, natural inlets and good snorkelling in calm conditions.

Punta Sapone: what to know before you go

Punta Sapone is not a large serviced beach. Rock and natural platforms dominate, with small sandy deposits that may grow or disappear after storms. It suits swimmers and snorkellers more than visitors expecting full beach facilities.

Mainly rocky coast with small sandy pockets

Roca Vecchia is predominantly rocky and Punta Sapone follows that pattern. Small sandy patches may form between rocks, but storms can change their size or remove them altogether.

For comfort

Bring a mat or thick towel; use sandy pockets when available without blocking sea-access routes.

Mixed seabed with variable depth

Rock, stones and small sandy sectors alternate. Some entry points are relatively gentle, while near rocky edges the water can deepen more quickly.

Before swimming

Check the exact entry point and never assume the whole inlet has the same depth.

Families: better with children already confident in the water

Punta Sapone is also used by families, but the shoreline remains uneven. Small sandy sections can help, yet rock, limited space and variable depth make it less straightforward than a true sandy beach.

With young children

Choose only a stable shallow entry, stay close and consider a broader beach if the sea is rough.

Easy approach from inhabited Roca Vecchia

Punta Sapone is in the Roca li Posti sector between San Foca and the archaeological area. It lies close to local roads and does not require a long trek, though the final metres may involve rock or small steps.

Footwear

Light shoes or secure sandals are safer than flip-flops for the final approach.

Parking: seasonal and not guaranteed beside the cove

We do not identify a dedicated public car park for Punta Sapone. In 2026 the municipality continued organising temporary summer parking in Melendugno’s coastal resorts, so location, charges and availability may vary.

Peak season

Arrive early, follow current signs and never improvise parking on access routes, pavements, vegetation or private land.

Nearby businesses, but the free shore remains basic

Roca is inhabited and has seasonal businesses nearby, but on the free Punta Sapone access you should not assume showers, public toilets, umbrella hire or lifeguard assistance.

Come prepared

Bring water, sun protection and beach essentials; treat nearby bars and businesses as separate private services.

Accessibility: no specific equipped sea access verified

We found no current confirmation of a public boardwalk, beach wheelchair or assisted-bathing service specifically at Punta Sapone. Rock, steps and irregular seabed can be significant obstacles.

Mobility needs

Check an equipped beach in Melendugno before travelling rather than assuming this access is barrier-free.

Snorkelling: one of the highlights

Rock, small inlets and changing seabed make Punta Sapone interesting with mask and snorkel. Coastal nature itineraries around Roca connect it with places such as Portulignu and Grotta dello Zingaro.

In calm water

Stay close to shore, wear water shoes and do not enter narrow caves or passages you do not know.

Grotta dello Zingaro: nearby along the coast, not an improvised shortcut

Grotta dello Zingaro belongs to the same Roca coastal system and appears on routes continuing from Punta Sapone towards Portulignu and the archaeological area. It should not be described as always ‘easily reachable from the beach’ in any conditions.

Take care

Assess sea, access and route before approaching caves; do not improvise a swimming crossing.

Rock jumps: always check depth and submerged rock

Some points are used for jumping, but depth can change greatly within a short distance. Seeing others jump is not proof that a spot is safe.

Essential rule

Never jump blind: personally check depth, waves, seabed and swimmers.

Adriatic conditions: wind and waves change the cove quickly

In calm weather the water can be very clear and entries easier. With waves on the rocks, getting in and out becomes harder and small sandy pockets can change shape.

Before settling

Watch the sea for a few minutes and choose another spot if waves are reaching the exit footholds.

Quiet can be possible, but never guaranteed in August

Punta Sapone is smaller and less serviced than famous beaches, but it is now well known. In peak season only a few groups can fill the most comfortable spots.

For more peace

Early morning or late afternoon are usually best for space and atmosphere.

Roca is Blue Flag in 2026

In 2026 Roca is among Melendugno’s Blue Flag coastal areas, together with San Foca, Torre Sant’Andrea and Torre dell’Orso.

Interpret correctly

The award concerns coastal quality and management criteria; it does not mean Punta Sapone itself provides every facility.

Roca Vecchia: sea and archaeology on the same coastline

Punta Sapone lies just north of the Roca Vecchia archaeological area and the Grotte della Poesia. A swim can therefore be combined with cultural sightseeing, but beach access and managed archaeological areas are separate.

Plan separately

Check opening hours and visitor arrangements for the archaeological site independently from your beach stop.

From 2026: a new management phase for Roca Vecchia and the Grotte della Poesia

In July 2026 the municipality presented a Special Public-Private Partnership for Roca Vecchia and the Grotte della Poesia. This matters for the nearby cultural area but should not be described as a completed transformation of Punta Sapone.

For visitors

Access, ticketing and archaeological-site organisation may evolve, so check current information before visiting.

Best for

Confident swimmers, couples, younger visitors and families used to rocky shores; also ideal for snorkellers and anyone wanting a compact natural access close to Roca Vecchia.

Main appeal

An authentic small cove chosen for sea and rock rather than facilities.

Less suitable for

Anyone wanting a large sandy beach, uniformly shallow water, guaranteed parking, a fully serviced beach club or verified barrier-free sea access.

Alternative

For more comfort consider the larger beaches at San Foca or Torre dell’Orso.

What to bring

Water shoes, thick towel or mat, water, sun protection, mask and snorkel. For a longer stay, compact shade can help where it does not block access.

Most useful

Water shoes and a mat make a mainly rocky shore much more comfortable.
