Punticeddha Beach near Sant’Andrea

Punticeddha Beach

A tiny free cove on the edge of Sant’Andrea’s rocky coastline, reached by a short walk and a descent cut into the rock. Sand, stones and rock share a very small space below cliffs and Mediterranean scrub.

Punticeddha Beach: what to know before you go

Punticeddha is a tiny natural cove, not a broad sandy beach. The scenery is outstanding, but narrow access, rock, limited room and cliff fragility require more care than a typical serviced beach.

Tiny free cove with sand and rock

Sources and imagery show a very small sandy pocket set between rock and cliff. Sand volume can change after storms and should not be imagined as a wide continuous beach.

Good to know

Space for towels disappears quickly when the cove is busy.

Walk-in access and narrow rock-cut steps

The cove is reached by a short coastal walk and a descent using steps or a small stairway cut into the rock. The final metres can be uneven, slippery or awkward with bulky bags.

Footwear

Use secure sandals or light shoes; avoid smooth flip-flops on rock.

Fragile cliff: stay on safe routes

Sant’Andrea has a high rocky coast affected by erosion. In February 2026 the nearby Lovers’ Arch collapsed after days of rain and rough seas, a clear reminder of the fragility of these formations.

On the cliff

Keep away from edges and unstable faces and always respect barriers and signs.

Mixed seabed and variable depth

Older copy described long shallow stretches and mostly sand. A safer description is a mixed seabed of sand, stones and rock with depth varying between the centre, margins and open-sea exit.

Before swimming

Check footing and depth at the exact entry point, especially after storms.

Families: possible in calm weather, but not an easy beach

The small sandy section can suit children when the Adriatic is calm, but narrow access, rocks, uneven depth and no guaranteed services require close supervision.

With young children

Assess space and conditions before descending; do not assume the seabed is always shallow.

Adriatic conditions: the cove does not guarantee calm water

The enclosed shape may reduce waves in some situations, but the cove is open to the Adriatic. Wind, swell and backwash can make entry and exit harder.

When waves build

If waves are pushing against rock or steps, postpone the swim or choose an easier access.

Swimming: good in calm water, more caution offshore

Calm conditions allow a pleasant swim within the bay, but depth, wave exposure and distance from the exit increase towards open water.

Practical rule

Identify your exit before swimming away and stay close if you are not experienced.

Snorkelling: interesting along the rocky edges

The transition between sand, rock, small recesses and deeper water is interesting with mask and snorkel in calm conditions.

How to do it

Stay close to shore and exit points; avoid narrow or roofed cavities.

Caves and recesses: observe carefully

Sant’Andrea’s coast contains many small cavities and indentations. Not all are suitable for swimming into, especially with waves or where the exit is not obvious.

Safety

Do not enter under overhanging rock or unknown passages just for photos.

Rock jumps: no point is automatically safe

Clear-looking water does not prove enough depth or the absence of submerged rock.

Never jump blind

Do not copy other swimmers without checking the exact landing area yourself.

Parking: no guaranteed space next to the cove

In 2026 Melendugno planned temporary summer parking areas across its seaside resorts. There is no specific free public car park we can guarantee for Punticeddha.

Peak season

Follow current signs, use authorised areas only and expect a walk.

Facilities: the cove remains free and natural

Bars and businesses operate in the wider Sant’Andrea area and along the coast road, but toilets, showers, hire, lifeguards and refreshments are not guaranteed directly at Punticeddha.

Bring with you

Water, sun protection and essentials for a few hours.

Accessibility: the descent is not suitable for everyone

We found no confirmed boardwalk, beach wheelchair or assisted bathing service specifically for Punticeddha. Natural path, rock steps and limited space are major barriers.

Check an alternative

Use an equipped access elsewhere on the Melendugno coast if bathing assistance is needed.

Crowding: the tiny cove can fill very quickly

Although photographs may look secluded, the usable surface fills rapidly in summer. Quiet conditions cannot be promised in August.

For more space

Early morning or late afternoon is generally best.

Torre Sant’Andrea is Blue Flag in 2026

Torre Sant’Andrea is listed among Melendugno’s Blue Flag coastal areas for 2026. The award applies to the locality and does not mean every tiny cove has a lifeguard, services or assisted access.

Interpret it correctly

Facilities depend on the exact section of coast.

Sant’Andrea or Otranto? The cove is right by the boundary

Punticeddha is commonly associated with Sant’Andrea and is catalogued that way in this project. Some mapping datasets classify it under Otranto because it lies immediately south of the Sant’Andrea settlement near the municipal boundary.

For navigation

Use the map pin and the name “Spiaggia della Punticeddha”, not only the municipality name.

From 2026 the nearby landscape is no longer the one in old photos

During the night of 14–15 February 2026 the famous Lovers’ Arch at Sant’Andrea collapsed after strong storms and rain. Punticeddha is not the arch, but it is part of the same fragile coastal setting.

What changes

Do not use old photos as proof of current cliff conditions; respect any closures.

Best for

Couples, older children, families used to small coves, snorkellers and photographers who accept a walk-in approach, little room and limited services.

Main appeal

Sand, rock, Mediterranean scrub and the Sant’Andrea coastline together.

Less suitable for

Anyone wanting a large sandy beach, step-free access, parking beside the towel, full beach-club facilities or easy access with pushchairs and reduced mobility.

Alternative

Choose a broader, easier beach nearby for greater comfort.

What to bring

Water shoes, light walking shoes, water, sunscreen, compact towel and mask. Bulky equipment is awkward because both access and space are limited.

Essential

Take all rubbish away and keep steps and passages clear.

Where Punticeddha Beach is

The cove lies immediately south of Sant’Andrea on the Adriatic coast towards Conca Specchiulla. Some mapping datasets place it under Otranto, while this project links it to Sant’Andrea.

Frequently asked questions about Punticeddha Beach

Practical answers about access, sand, seabed, children, sea conditions, parking, facilities and cliff safety.

Is Punticeddha Beach free?
Yes. The project master classifies it as a free beach, not a private beach club.
Is it entirely sandy?
No. It is a small sandy pocket between rock and cliff, and the amount of sand can change after storms.
How do you reach Punticeddha?
By a short walk followed by a narrow descent using rock-cut steps or a small stairway. The final metres require care.
Is the seabed always shallow?
No. It is mixed and variable, with sand, stones and rock and different depths between the centre, edges and open-sea exit.
Is it suitable for children?
It can be in calm water and when there is room on the sandier section, but close supervision and a careful descent are needed.
Does the cove stay calm because it is sheltered?
Not always. It remains connected to the Adriatic, so wind, waves and backwash can make entry and exit difficult.
Is it good for snorkelling?
Yes in calm water, particularly around the rocky margins, while staying close to shore and exits.
Can I swim into the caves?
Not automatically. Avoid cavities with unclear exits, submerged passages and areas beneath unstable rock.
Where can I park?
No dedicated guaranteed public car park is identified. Use authorised seasonal parking and expect to walk.
Are there bars, toilets and showers at the cove?
Not as guaranteed Punticeddha facilities. Businesses in the wider Sant’Andrea area are separate from the free beach.
Why do some maps place it in Otranto?
The cove lies immediately south of Sant’Andrea and close to the municipal boundary. This project links it to Sant’Andrea, while some mapping datasets classify it under Otranto.
What changed in 2026?
In February 2026 the nearby Lovers’ Arch at Sant’Andrea collapsed after severe weather. It was not Punticeddha, but the event highlights the fragility of this rocky coast.
