Li Scianuli · Torre Squillace

A small free beach beside the 16th-century coastal tower, mixing sand, pebbles and low rock: more intimate and natural than nearby Sant’Isidoro, with a mixed seabed and good snorkelling.

Li Scianuli and Torre Squillace: what to know before you go

This is a small free cove, not a large serviced beach. Its appeal is the setting of tower, sea and rock; the sand and seabed are mixed, public services are limited and parking should never be assumed.

Small free beach with sand, pebbles and rock

Li Scianuli is a small south-facing cove partly sheltered by rock. The centre is sandy, but coarse sand, pebbles and rock occur on the beach and around its edges: do not expect one continuous strip of powder-fine Ionian sand.

For your towel

Choose the central sandy section for comfort; a thin beach mat can help where pebbles are present.

Mixed seabed: shallow at first, but not uniform

The easiest entry points are initially shallow, but sand, stones and rock alternate and conditions change towards the rocky margins. Calling it an ‘uncared-for’ seabed would be misleading: it is simply natural and irregular.

Before entering

Check where you step and never assume uniform depth. Water shoes are recommended around stones and rock.

Families: suitable if you choose the right section

The small sandy area and initially shallow water can work for families used to natural beaches. With very young children, however, pebbles, rocks and limited space make Li Scianuli less straightforward than Sant’Isidoro’s larger sandy beach.

With young children

Stay on the sandy section, check the bottom before swimming and bring water shoes if children explore the edges.

Couples and younger visitors: nature, but no blind jumps

The mix of tiny beach, rock and clear water appeals to visitors looking for a less structured setting. The rocks may invite direct entry into the sea, but depth and underwater obstacles must always be checked.

No blind diving

Never jump from rock without checking depth, waves and submerged stones.

How to get there: coastal road between Porto Cesareo and Sant’Isidoro

Torre Squillace is at the northern end of Nardò’s coastline, between La Strea/Porto Cesareo and Sant’Isidoro. It is reached from the coastal road and local streets; the beach lies just a few metres from the tower.

Use the map pin

Navigate to the Via Federico García Lorca/Litoranea Cristoforo Colombo area, then use existing access only and do not cross private land or vegetation.

Parking: never assume a guaranteed space

We found no stable confirmation of a dedicated public car park for the cove. Parking is within the surrounding road area and may depend on signs, season and the coastal-redevelopment works.

In summer

Arrive early, obey signs and restrictions, and keep vegetation, pedestrian access, private land and safety areas clear.

Food nearby, but few public services on the beach

Torre Squillace is not completely isolated: food and accommodation businesses operate in the locality. On the small free beach itself, however, do not assume showers, public toilets, umbrella hire or lifeguard assistance.

Come prepared

Bring water, shade and beach essentials. Nearby business services are private and opening hours and availability can change.

Accessibility: no verified equipped route onto this small beach

We found no current confirmation of a continuous public boardwalk, beach wheelchair or dedicated assistance specifically at Li Scianuli. Natural ground, sand, pebbles and rock can be difficult for reduced mobility.

Specific needs

Check an equipped beach in the Sant’Isidoro or Nardò area before travelling rather than relying on this natural access.

Sea and wind: conditions strongly affect this small cove

In calm weather the cove can have very clear water and easy entry through the sandy section. Wind and waves make the rocky margins and mixed seabed more difficult for entering and leaving the water.

Practical rule

In rough water avoid the rocks and consider the broader Sant’Isidoro beach for a simpler sandy entry.

Snorkelling: one of the highlights

Rocky margins and protected marine habitats make this an interesting spot for mask and snorkel; marine life can be observed close to shore. The area connects with Porto Cesareo’s protected marine system.

Look, do not collect

Stay close to shore in calm water, do not touch marine organisms or habitats and follow protected-area rules.

Crowds: a few groups can fill the sandy area

Li Scianuli is much smaller than the region’s major beaches. Even without huge crowds, just a few families or groups can occupy the most comfortable sandy space, especially at weekends and in August.

For more quiet

Go early or late. If the cove is full, do not block paths or settle on vegetation.

The 16th-century tower shapes the landscape

Torre Squillace belongs to the coastal watchtower system built in the 16th century to observe and defend the shore. Its square, truncated-pyramid profile stands only metres from the beach and is the cove’s main landmark.

Respect the monument

View it without using walls, structures or restricted areas as improvised diving platforms or access routes.

Battisti and Mogol: local tradition rather than historical certainty

Torre Squillace has a strong local memory linked to Mogol and Lucio Battisti. Stories say this coastline provided the setting for melodies and lyrics including ‘Acqua azzurra, acqua chiara’; it is more accurate to present this as local tradition, not a fully documented fact.

What is documented

Mogol stayed at a villa in the area and Battisti visited; in 2019 Nardò held an event here marking the song’s 50th anniversary.

From 2026: ecological redevelopment of Torre Squillace

In 2026 a major coastal-redevelopment project received funding. Plans include renaturalisation, habitat and dune protection, pedestrian routes, removal of waste and inappropriate structures, and recovery of elements of the rural landscape.

What visitors should know

The project is not already complete: access, parking and paths may change as work progresses. Follow on-site signs.

Blue Flag 2026 for the Torre Squillace coastline

In 2026 Torre Squillace was included among Nardò’s Blue Flag coastal areas, alongside Porto Selvaggio, Sant’Isidoro, Santa Caterina and Santa Maria al Bagno.

Not a promise of every service

The award concerns coastal quality and management criteria; it does not mean this tiny free beach personally provides every facility.

Best for

Visitors who enjoy small free beaches, mixed coastline, snorkelling and a strong historical setting; couples, younger visitors and families comfortable with a natural shore and bringing their own essentials.

Main appeal

Sea, rocks and tower are concentrated in a very small area: better for an intimate stop than for a large serviced beach day.

Less suitable for

Anyone wanting only powder-fine sand, lots of space, guaranteed parking, every service within metres or verified step-free access. With very young children, Sant’Isidoro may also be easier.

Nearby alternative

For a broader sandy shore, consider Sant’Isidoro’s main beach.

What to bring

Water, shade, sun protection, towel or mat, water shoes, mask and snorkel. Bring a rubbish bag too: the beach is tiny and individual behaviour quickly affects the place.

Water shoes really help

Not essential in the sandy centre, but very useful on pebbles, rocks and the mixed seabed.

Frequently asked questions about Li Scianuli and Torre Squillace

Practical answers about sand, pebbles, seabed, children, parking, services, snorkelling and redevelopment.

Is Li Scianuli a free beach?
Yes. The small beach beside Torre Squillace is free; private businesses in the locality should not be confused with public beach services.
Is it sandy or rocky?
It is mixed: a small sandy section, including coarse sand and pebbles, is surrounded by low rock and rocky areas.
Is the seabed shallow?
At the easiest points it is shallow at first, but not uniform: sand, stones and rock alternate especially around the edges.
Is it suitable for children?
It can suit families used to natural beaches if they choose the sandy section in calm conditions. Sant’Isidoro is generally easier with very young children.
Do I need water shoes?
They are recommended. You may not need them in the sandy centre, but they help on pebbles, rocks and mixed seabed.
How do I get there?
Use the coastal road between Porto Cesareo and Sant’Isidoro and head for the Torre Squillace area. The Take me there button leads to the coast beside the tower.
Where can I park?
We do not promise a dedicated public car park. Parking depends on current signs and may change as the coastal redevelopment advances.
Are there bars or restaurants?
Food and accommodation businesses operate in the locality, but on the free beach itself you should not assume showers, toilets, hire or lifeguards.
Is the beach accessible for disabled visitors?
We found no current confirmation of a dedicated equipped public route at Li Scianuli. Sand, pebbles and rock can make access difficult.
Is it good for snorkelling?
Yes, especially along rocky edges in calm water. Marine life is visible close to shore.
Did Battisti really write Acqua azzurra, acqua chiara here?
A strong local tradition links Torre Squillace, Mogol, Battisti and the song, but it should not be presented as historical certainty. Their presence in the area is documented, and a commemorative event was held here in 2019.
What is changing at Torre Squillace?
From 2026 an ecological-redevelopment project is funded, with renaturalisation, habitat protection, pedestrian routes and removal of inappropriate elements. It is in development, not already complete.
