Riviera degli Haethey: what to know before you go
This is very different from Otranto’s wilder coves: it sits within the urban area, close to homes, hotels and businesses. That makes it convenient, but summer also means crowds and parking to plan.
Urban beach: sand and free sections
Riviera degli Haethey occupies the coast immediately north of central Otranto. There are small fine-sand beaches, free sections and nearby beach clubs; the shoreline becomes rockier towards Porto Craulo.
Good to know
If you want the free beach, look at the section before settling. Sandy space is not equally wide everywhere and fills quickly in peak season.
Sandy and generally shallow in the sandy sections
Local descriptions confirm fine sand and a shallow seabed in the bay. This is one reason families use this urban shore, although depth and conditions change towards rocks and protective structures.
With children
Stay close to young children and check the actual entry point: shallow does not mean identical depth along the whole Riviera.

Families: one of the most convenient options near the centre
Sand, relatively shallow water in the easiest sections and proximity to town make the Riviera practical with children. Bars, accommodation and other services are much closer than at Otranto’s remote coves.
When to go
In July and August arrive in the morning: urban sandy areas are small compared with the number of visitors in Otranto.
How to get there: Via Riviera Haethey and Porto Craulo area
The beach is on Otranto’s northern seafront along Via Riviera Haethey, within walking distance of the centre and station. There is no long natural trail: access is from the urban neighbourhood through existing routes to the sea.
On foot
If you stay in central Otranto it is often easier to walk than move the car for a few hundred metres.
Parking: urban area, variable availability
The Riviera is surrounded by streets and regulated urban parking, but there is no guaranteed free space beside the beach. Availability drops sharply in peak season, and future waterfront works are intended to change the use of parts of the seafront currently occupied by cars.
Avoid surprises
Check signs, road markings, charges and restrictions on the day. If you stay nearby, ask your accommodation about private parking or a garage.
Bars, food and beach clubs nearby
Unlike isolated coves, this is an urban tourist setting. Nearby there are beach clubs with umbrellas and loungers and at least one beach restaurant, as well as bars, hotels and other businesses in the neighbourhood.
Free beach
Beach-club services are private and may be paid or customer-only; do not treat them as public services of the free beach.
Accessibility: do not confuse this beach with the Inclusive Beach
We found no up-to-date confirmation of a full public service with beach wheelchairs and assistance specifically on Riviera degli Haethey. In 2026 the municipality instead operated Otranto Inclusive Beach at Gradoni, with platforms, beach wheelchairs, accessible changing areas and qualified staff.

Young travellers: sea close to town without a car
A practical choice for couples and younger visitors staying in Otranto: beach, promenade and historic centre can be combined on foot. Beach clubs and venues are nearby; for a wilder setting, head farther north.
Main advantage
Urban convenience is the strength here. Choose somewhere else if you want complete isolation and silence.
Adriatic conditions can change quickly with wind and waves
When calm, the water around the small sandy areas can be very clear and entry easy. Strong onshore wind and waves make conditions less child-friendly and less comfortable around rocky edges.
Before swimming
Look at the actual sea conditions and follow any flags or lifeguard advice rather than relying on yesterday’s weather.
Snorkelling: better around rocky edges in calm water
The sandy seabed in front of the beach is simple; rocky margins and the direction of Porto Craulo are more varied for mask and snorkel when the sea is calm.
Safety
Stay close to shore and away from boat traffic; water shoes can help around rocky sections.
Crowds: high in the central summer weeks
Being close to the centre, accommodation and services makes this shore very easy to reach. Free areas can therefore become crowded, especially at weekends and in August.
For more space
Go early in the morning or late afternoon. For long stretches of sand, consider beaches farther north of Otranto.
From 2026: a new waterfront is being designed for Riviera Haethey and Porto Craulo
In 2026 the design contract was awarded for the urban regeneration of Porto Craulo–Via Riviera degli Haethey. The plan includes cliff-safety work and a continuous panoramic promenade, recovering seafront space currently also occupied by parked cars.

Best for
Families wanting to stay close to services, couples and younger travellers based in Otranto, anyone who prefers to walk to the sea, and visitors who want to combine beach, promenade and historic centre in one day.
Practical choice
Its main added value is location and convenience rather than a wild, isolated setting.
Less suitable for
Anyone looking for a large wild beach, dunes and pine forest without buildings, easy free parking or lots of personal space in the busiest summer weeks.
Alternative
For a more natural day, consider Baia dei Turchi, Mulino d’Acqua or other stretches north of Otranto after checking access and services.
What to bring
On the free section bring your own shade, sun protection, water and towel. Mask and water shoes are useful around rocky margins; otherwise the nearby neighbourhood makes it easy to buy anything you forgot.
Lighter packing
You do not need to prepare as for a remote cove, but do not assume private beach-club services are free or available without booking.
