The bay and seafront

The town beach occupies a small bay in the centre of the resort. The surrounding coastline alternates low cliffs, rocky platforms and access points to the sea.

Santa Maria al Bagno is very busy in summer. Traffic, parking and access may be regulated by seasonal measures.

The Quattro Colonne

The Quattro Colonne are the remains of Torre del Fiume di Galatena, built in the 16th century as part of the coastal defence system.

The structure overlooking the sea is one of the resort’s most recognisable symbols and today also gives its name to the square and surrounding area.

The village of welcome

Between 1943 and 1947 Santa Maria al Bagno hosted DP Camp 34 for Jewish refugees who had survived persecution and were travelling towards a new life.

The Museum of Memory and Welcome preserves documents and evidence of this experience, a central part of the modern history of the resort and the Nardò community.
