Nfoca Ciucci at Roca Vecchia, Melendugno

Nfoca Ciucci

A small rocky inlet at Roca Vecchia, close to the ancient walls and Grotta della Poesia: clear water and an interesting seabed, but on a fragile coastline where cliff warnings and current restrictions must be checked before entering the sea.

Nfoca Ciucci: what to know before you go

A small natural sea access on Roca Vecchia's rocky coast, not a serviced beach. Its archaeological setting and fragile cliffs mean you must distinguish between what is attractive to look at and what is actually permitted on the day.

Small rocky cove, not a sandy beach

Nfoca Ciucci is an inlet in Roca Vecchia's low rocky coast. Small pockets of sand or sediment may occur among the rocks, but its main character is rocky.

Where to sit

Bring a thick towel or mat and choose stable surfaces away from cliff edges and any restricted areas.

Access from the Roca li Posti area

The cove lies near the inhabited area and the ancient walls of Roca Vecchia. It does not require a long trek, but the last metres are rocky and access can change when safety barriers or warnings are installed.

Before descending

Use only obvious authorised passages and never bypass fences or warning signs.

Mixed seabed and variable depth

Older descriptions referred to some shallow stretches, but it is not safe to generalise. Rock, stones and small sandy areas alternate and depth changes quickly between points.

Before swimming

Check depth and bottom at the exact entry point; water shoes are recommended.

Families: better with older children who are confident swimmers

Local families may use the cove, but it is not an easy toddler beach. Rock, changing depth, little space and possible cliff restrictions require more care.

With young children

Choose a broader sandy beach with gradual entry, especially if the sea is not completely calm.

Cliffs: always check current restrictions on site

A maritime order issued in December 2023 introduced safety zones along several unstable sections of the Melendugno coast and included Roca li Posti as far as Nfoca Ciucci. We found no specific revocation for this sector in the sources reviewed.

What this means

Check signs, buoys and current orders before entering the water. If the section is restricted, do not cross the limits even if others do.

Rock jumps: the old recommendation should be removed

The old page promoted spectacular cliff jumps. That is no longer suitable advice: in addition to depth and submerged rocks, cliff stability and any restrictions must be considered.

Essential rule

Do not jump from unverified points and keep away from cliff edges marked as unstable.

Adriatic conditions: waves make rocky exits harder

In calm conditions the water can be very clear. When waves push against the rock, entry and especially exit can become awkward or dangerous.

Before entering

Watch the sea for a few minutes and identify your exit before swimming.

Snorkelling: interesting only where bathing is permitted

The rocky seabed and small recesses make Nfoca Ciucci interesting with mask and snorkel, but first confirm that your chosen sector is outside any restricted zone.

If swimming is allowed

Stay close to shore, avoid unknown cavities and do not swim directly beneath fragile cliffs.

Grotta della Poesia: nearby, but not a swimming destination from here

Grotta della Poesia is close and from 2026 is part of the new integrated management of Roca's archaeological area. Swimming and jumping inside the cave are prohibited, so the old suggestion of reaching it with a few strokes should be removed.

To visit

Use the official land entrance to the archaeological site and follow visitor rules.

Sea beside one of Salento's major archaeological sites

Nfoca Ciucci sits beside the archaeological landscape of Roca Vecchia, a fortified settlement occupied since the Bronze Age and closely linked to Adriatic routes.

Combine sea and history

Treat the cove and archaeological site as two nearby experiences with separate access rules.

Parking: seasonal, not guaranteed beside the cove

There is no dedicated public car park we can promise for Nfoca Ciucci. In 2026 Melendugno continued to use temporary summer parking areas in its coastal resorts, so availability and charges can vary.

Peak season

Arrive early, follow current signs and consider parking farther away and walking.

No facilities should be attributed directly to the cove

Nfoca Ciucci is a natural access, not a beach club. Bars, restaurants, parking and archaeological visitor services are nearby but separate from the rocks.

Bring essentials

Organise water, sun protection and water shoes before descending.

Accessibility: no specific equipped sea access verified

We found no current confirmation of a boardwalk, beach wheelchair or public assisted-bathing service specifically at Nfoca Ciucci. Rocky ground and restrictions may create significant barriers.

Reduced mobility

Check an equipped beach elsewhere in Melendugno rather than assuming this cove is accessible.

No longer known only to locals

The name now appears in guides, tourist maps and Roca Vecchia itineraries. Usable space is small, so a few groups can make it feel crowded in July and August.

For more peace

Early morning or late afternoon, provided current access and safety rules allow it.

Roca is Blue Flag in 2026

In 2026 Roca is listed among Melendugno's Blue Flag coastal areas together with San Foca, Torre Sant'Andrea and Torre dell'Orso.

What it does not mean

The award does not certify lifeguards, facilities or unrestricted access at every small rocky cove.

From 2026: new management of the Roca Vecchia archaeological area

In July 2026 a new management system began for conservation, visitor access and enhancement of Roca Vecchia and the Grotte della Poesia, with an organised visitor route and dedicated archaeological services.

For visitors

Do not confuse archaeological-site rules with coastal rules: check site access and bathing permissions separately.

Best for

Adults and older children used to rocks, coastal-landscape enthusiasts, snorkellers and visitors combining the sea with Roca's archaeological site.

Main appeal

A small natural cove in an exceptional historic and coastal setting.

Less suitable for

Very young children, weak swimmers, anyone wanting sand, uniformly shallow water, beach-club facilities or easy movement over rock.

Alternative

For a simpler beach day choose the sandy beaches of Torre dell'Orso or San Foca.

What to bring

Water shoes, thick towel or mat, water, sunscreen and a mask. Comfortable walking shoes are useful if also visiting the archaeological area.

Above all

Bring caution: signs and barriers always override old online recommendations.

Where Nfoca Ciucci is

The cove is at Roca Vecchia in the Roca li Posti area, close to the ancient walls and the Grotta della Poesia archaeological complex.
