Pascariello Grande and Piccolo

Two small coastal basins in the inhabited heart of Roca Vecchia, linked to the sea through the rocky shore and used for bathing for generations. The smaller basin also has a local history of hand-made changes to its access and bottom.

Pascariello Grande and Piccolo: what to know before you go

These are not ordinary sandy beaches or perfectly isolated pools. They are small rocky coastal basins connected with the open sea: appealing for this type of bathing, but always dependent on waves, depth and current access conditions.

Two small coastal basins in the rocky shore

Pascariello Grande and Piccolo are two small basins and inlets on Roca Vecchia's rocky coast. They look like natural pools, but they are not closed tanks separated from the sea.

What to expect

Limited room, rock, seawater and openings to the outside rather than a conventional beach.

Pascariello Piccolo is not entirely untouched nature

A local account published in 2007 says that roughly 75–80 years earlier the basin was cleared of rocks to make it easier for children. It also reports sand being brought from a nearby beach and a small cavity and steps being carved into the rock.

Why it matters

Today's shape reflects both natural coast and historic human intervention.

Short access from the village, but over rock

The basins are close to the houses of Roca Vecchia and do not require a long walk. The final section is rocky and may include carved steps or uneven surfaces.

Footwear

Secure sandals or light shoes for the approach and water shoes on the rocks are useful.

Different depth between Grande, Piccolo and the sea opening

There is no single depth. Piccolo can have more enclosed shallow areas, while other points and the connection to open water can be deeper or rockier.

Before entering

Check depth and bottom every time, especially after storms move sand and debris.

Families: Piccolo has a long tradition of children's bathing

Local memory says Pascariello Piccolo was adapted specifically so children could bathe in a more enclosed spot. That is not the same as a modern safety certification.

With children

Stay within arm's reach, check depth and never rely only on the 'natural pool' reputation.

Sheltered in some conditions, not automatically safe in rough water

The basin shape can reduce wind and waves compared with open sea on some days, but the water is still connected to the Adriatic. Waves and backwash can enter through the openings.

Important correction

Do not use Pascariello as an automatically safe alternative when the sea outside is rough.

Swimming: stay within the area you can manage

Moving from the basins towards the open sea may look easy in calm water, but difficulty rises with waves, depth and current.

Practical rule

With children or weak swimmers stay in the more enclosed section and avoid turning the swim into an open-sea crossing.

Rock jumps: not every edge is a diving platform

Rock surrounds the basins, but depth and underwater obstacles differ between points and can change.

Before jumping

Never jump blind and do not copy other swimmers without checking the exact landing area.

Snorkelling: interesting around the rocky margins

In calm water, rock, small passages and the transition between enclosed basins and open sea can be enjoyable with mask and snorkel.

How to do it

Stay close to exits and avoid unknown cracks or submerged passages.

Parking: seasonal options, no dedicated space guaranteed

Roca Vecchia is a small summer settlement and in 2026 Melendugno also planned temporary parking areas in its coastal resorts. No dedicated free public car park is guaranteed for Pascariello.

July and August

Arrive early, use authorised spaces only and expect to walk from available parking.

Businesses are nearby, but they are not pool facilities

Because the basins are within the inhabited area, restaurants and seasonal businesses exist nearby. Pascariello remains a free natural access, so toilets, showers, hire and assistance should not be assumed directly at the pools.

Come prepared

Bring water and essentials if staying for several hours.

Accessibility: no specific assisted bathing access verified

We found no confirmation of a boardwalk, beach wheelchair or public assisted-bathing service specifically at Pascariello Grande and Piccolo. Rock and steps may be major barriers.

Reduced mobility

Consider an equipped access elsewhere on the Melendugno coast.

Small space: it can fill quickly

The basins are well known and close to houses, so a few families or groups can occupy much of the usable rock at peak times.

For more room

Early morning or late afternoon is usually easier.

Roca is Blue Flag in 2026

In 2026 Roca is listed among Melendugno's Blue Flag coastal areas together with San Foca, Torre Sant'Andrea and Torre dell'Orso.

Interpret it correctly

The award applies to the resort and does not mean every small basin has lifeguards, facilities or equipped accessibility.

Roca Vecchia is much more than a swim

Nearby lies one of Salento's major archaeological sites, with Bronze Age fortifications and the Grotte della Poesia complex.

Combine the two

Sea and archaeology are close but have separate accesses and rules.

From 2026: new management of the nearby archaeological area

From July 2026 Roca Vecchia and the Grotte della Poesia entered a new organised management system focused on conservation, visits and enhancement.

For a full day in Roca

Check archaeological opening times and rules separately; they do not automatically apply to bathing at Pascariello.

Best for

Families used to rocky coasts, older children, couples, cautious swimmers and snorkellers looking for a distinctive small bathing spot within Roca Vecchia.

Main appeal

Enclosed scale, local history and direct contact with the rocky coast.

Less suitable for

Anyone wanting a large sandy beach, uniform shallow water, step-free access, lots of room, beach-club services or a place that is automatically safe in rough sea.

For more comfort

Consider the sandy beaches of Torre dell'Orso or San Foca.

What to bring

Water shoes, compact towel, water, sunscreen and mask. Limited space makes chairs, tables and bulky equipment inconvenient.

Travel light

Keep steps, passages and sea-entry/exit points clear.

Where Pascariello Grande and Piccolo are

The basins are in the coastal settlement of Roca Vecchia, Melendugno, just north of the archaeological area.

Frequently asked questions about Pascariello Grande and Piccolo

Practical answers about the pools, children, seabed, rough sea, access, parking and local history.

Are Pascariello Grande and Piccolo natural pools?
They are two small coastal basins connected to the sea. They look like natural pools, but a local historical account says at least Pascariello Piccolo was also modified by hand many decades ago.
What was changed at Pascariello Piccolo?
According to a 2007 local account, rocks were removed from the bottom, sand was brought from a nearby beach and a small cavity and steps were carved into the rock.
Are they suitable for children?
Piccolo has a long family tradition, but it is not a supervised pool. Always check depth, waves and children closely.
Does the water stay calm when the sea is rough?
The basins can be more sheltered in some conditions, but they remain connected to the Adriatic. Waves and backwash can enter, so rough-sea bathing is not automatically safe.
Is the seabed always shallow?
No. Depth and bottom vary between Grande, Piccolo and the opening to the sea and can change after storms.
How do you get there?
The basins are close to Roca Vecchia's inhabited area. The final section is rocky and may include steps or uneven footholds.
Where can I park?
No dedicated always-available public car park is guaranteed. Use authorised seasonal parking and walk to the basins.
Are there bars or facilities?
Businesses are nearby in Roca, but toilets, showers, hire and bathing assistance should not be considered facilities of the pools themselves.
Is it good for snorkelling?
Yes in calm water, staying close to exit points and avoiding unknown cracks or submerged passages.
Can you dive from the rocks?
Do not assume it is safe. Check depth, seabed and sea conditions at the exact point before any jump.
Is Roca Blue Flag?
Yes. Roca is among Melendugno's Blue Flag coastal areas in 2026, but that does not give every pool identical facilities.
What changed in 2026?
From July 2026 the Roca Vecchia archaeological area and Grotte della Poesia have a new organised management system. Pascariello remains a separate bathing place with its own access conditions.
