The resort and access to the sea
Santa Caterina is centred on its square, small beach and harbour. Along the shore, rocky platforms, inlets and small areas used for swimming alternate.
The resort centre is very busy in summer. Access, traffic and parking may be regulated by seasonal measures.
The tower and coastal system
Torre Santa Caterina belongs to the historic network of coastal towers. The General Catalogue of Cultural Heritage records the visual connection between Torre dell’Alto to the north and the Santa Caterina tower to the south.
This system allowed sightings to be communicated rapidly along the Ionian coastline and to inland communities.
Punta dell’Aspide and underwater archaeology
A Late Republican shipwreck is documented in the sea off Punta dell’Aspide, originally carrying numerous wine amphorae.
The find is part of the wider archaeological heritage of the Nardò coast, studied through research both on land and underwater.
