I Salotti

A shaped rocky shoreline between Santa Caterina and Santa Maria al Bagno: steps and seat-like terraces cut into rock, deeper water at several points and an interesting seabed, but sea entry and exit require care.

I Salotti: what to know before you go

This is neither a beach club nor a sandy beach. It is a rocky bathing spot used for generations for sunbathing, swimming and jumping. The stepped rock is distinctive, but deeper water, waves and rocky exit points demand more experience than a normal beach.

Shaped rocky shore, not a beach club

I Salotti are a rocky section of Santa Caterina’s coast. Steps, ledges and seat-like shapes cut into the stone create the characteristic ‘outdoor sitting rooms’. The historical record classifies the place as rocky shore, not a private beach club.

Where to settle

Choose a stable ledge and keep steps, passages and sea-entry points clear.

The story of the woman who had the Salotti carved remains local tradition

Local memory says that in the early 1900s a wealthy woman had the rocks shaped into steps and seats for guests. The story is repeated by area guides, but we found no documentary source identifying her or proving the work.

How to read it

Treat it as an engaging part of Santa Caterina’s bathing tradition, not as confirmed history.

Rocky seabed, with depth increasing quickly at some points

Below the cliffs are rock, sandy areas farther out and cavities. Diving accounts describe caves only a few metres deep as well as much deeper sections, so the seabed is not uniform.

Before entering

Always check depth and your exit point. Less confident swimmers should remain close to the easiest exits.

Rock jumps are popular, but no jump is automatically safe

I Salotti have long been used for jumping from different heights. That does not make every point safe: depth, submerged rocks, waves and other swimmers can change the risk even within the same day.

Essential rule

Do not copy locals as proof of safety. Check depth and landing area yourself and never jump in rough water.

With waves, getting out can be harder than getting in

On a rocky shore the sea can look inviting even when waves make it difficult to grab the exit points. In July 2026 two young swimmers at I Salotti struggled to get back out because waves were hitting the rocks and had to be rescued.

Before swimming

Watch how waves reach the footholds for several minutes. If the exit is not clearly easy, choose another spot.

Snorkelling: interesting along the rocky coast

Rock, small recesses, sandy patches and changing depth make the area interesting with mask and snorkel. Diving accounts also describe Posidonia, caves and varied marine life.

How to do it

Go in calm water, stay visible and do not enter caves or narrow passages without specialist training.

Scuba and caves: interesting, but for trained divers

I Salotti are also known as a dive site. Underwater reports describe shallow caves, arches, sandy flats and deeper sectors. These are not equivalent to an easy beginner snorkelling route.

If diving

Caves, depth and current require suitable training, equipment and planning. Do not improvise overhead diving.

Families: better with older children who swim confidently

The town-centre setting means local families also use the spot, but this is not a toddler beach: there is no sandy gradual entry or uniformly shallow water.

With children

Use only a low calm access with older confident swimmers; for young children choose Santa Caterina’s small sandy beach.

Access along the coast towards Santa Maria al Bagno

I Salotti lie south of central Santa Caterina in the direction of Santa Maria al Bagno. They are reached from the urban road and coastal walk without a long nature trail.

Walking

If already staying in the resort, walking is often easier than trying to park beside the rocks.

Parking: regulated and difficult at busy times

Santa Caterina has regulated parking areas, but there is no guaranteed free public parking directly at I Salotti. Parking arrangements and charges may change from season to season.

Summer

Arrive early or use outer parking and available connections; always check markings and signs.

Town services nearby, not facilities on the free rocks

Santa Caterina has bars, food businesses and tourist services, but on I Salotti you should not assume showers, public toilets, hire or a dedicated lifeguard post.

Important

A nearby lifeguard helping in the 2026 rescue does not mean I Salotti have permanent supervised bathing.

Accessibility: near the road, but sea access is rocky

The coast is reached from the urban area, but we found no confirmed boardwalk, hoist or public assisted-bathing service specifically at I Salotti. Rock-cut steps and uneven footholds can be major barriers.

Reduced mobility

For barrier-free sea entry, check an equipped beach or facility on the Nardò coast.

No longer only a local secret

Older descriptions called I Salotti almost unknown to tourists, but today the place appears in guides and coastal itineraries. In July and August the most comfortable ledges can fill quickly.

For more peace

Early morning or late afternoon generally offers more choice and less pressure on access points.

Santa Caterina is Blue Flag in 2026

In 2026 Santa Caterina is among Nardò’s Blue Flag coastal areas, together with Porto Selvaggio, Sant’Isidoro, Santa Maria al Bagno and Torre Squillace.

What it does not mean

The award concerns coastal quality and management; it does not certify lifeguards, showers or facilitated access at every individual rocky spot.

From 2026: ZTL and pedestrian rules make car planning more important

In summer 2026 Santa Caterina’s ZTL operated from 20 June to 15 September between 21:00 and 02:00, with an entry gate on Via Cantù; the central square also became pedestrian-only from 19:00 in the summer period.

Later seasons

Dates and hours are seasonal, so always check current rules before driving to the resort.

Best for

Confident swimmers, adults and older teenagers used to rocks, couples and snorkellers wanting a distinctive sea access close to the built-up area.

Main appeal

The carved-looking rock, local story and sea matter more here than beach-club services.

Less suitable for

Very young children, weak swimmers, anyone wanting sand, uniformly shallow water, continuous natural shade, on-site facilities or verified barrier-free sea access.

Alternative

For simplicity choose Santa Caterina’s small central sandy beach.

What to bring

Water shoes, a thick towel or mat, water, sun protection, mask and snorkel. Avoid bulky gear that is hard to place on the stepped rocks and keep access routes clear.

Essential

Water shoes and a mat make moving and sitting on the rock much easier.

Frequently asked questions about I Salotti

Practical answers about rock, history, jumps, seabed, families, snorkelling, parking and safety.

Are I Salotti a beach or a beach club?
They are a rocky bathing spot in Santa Caterina, not a normal sandy beach and not treated in the new page as a private beach club.
Why are they called I Salotti?
The rock has steps and ledges shaped like seats and small outdoor sitting rooms facing the sea.
Is it true that a woman had them carved in the early 1900s?
It is a local tradition repeated by several guides, but we found no historical document identifying the woman or proving the work.
Is the seabed deep?
At several points yes, and depth varies. Diving accounts describe caves at shallow depth and much deeper sectors farther out.
Can I jump from the rocks?
The place is traditionally used for jumping, but no point is automatically safe. Check depth, submerged rocks, waves and swimmers every time.
What happened in July 2026?
On 29 July two young swimmers had difficulty exiting because waves were striking the rocks and they were rescued. It is a concrete example of how rocky exits can become difficult.
Is it suitable for children?
Better for older children who swim confidently and are used to rocks. Young children are better served by the small sandy beach in the resort.
Is it good for snorkelling?
Yes in calm conditions. Rock, cavities and mixed rocky-sandy seabed make the nearshore area interesting.
Are there underwater caves?
Diving reports describe several cavities and passages. They should not be explored in breath-hold or scuba without appropriate training.
Where can I park?
We do not promise free parking directly at I Salotti. Parking in Santa Caterina is regulated and summer visitors should arrive early or park farther away.
Is it accessible for disabled visitors?
The coast is close to urban roads, but we found no confirmed equipped sea access specifically at I Salotti. Rock-cut steps can be a significant obstacle.
Is Santa Caterina Blue Flag?
Yes. Santa Caterina is one of Nardò’s Blue Flag coastal areas in 2026, but the award does not guarantee every facility at every individual rocky access.
