Torre San Giovanni Marittimo
Torre San Giovanni Marittimo is Ugento’s historic coastal tower converted into a lighthouse, recognisable by its black-and-white chequered finish. The Italian Naval League records its construction in 1565 and lighthouse function since 1932; after restoration it reopened for public use in 2024 and is managed by the local LNI section. Current visiting hours should still be checked.
Torre San Giovanni Marittimo: what to know before you go
Practical information checked for access, setting, safety and services. The lighthouse tower reopened after restoration in 2024 and is entrusted to the local Italian Naval League section. Events in 2026 confirm active use, but interior opening and visiting hours should be checked first.
Getting there and access
Reach it from the resort roads and view it from outside. Do not cross fences, operational areas, private land or unauthorised sections to get closer.
Getting there and access
If an access point is closed or altered, do not improvise shortcuts: use authorised routes only.
Sea and coast
This is not a beach: its main value is scenic, historic or natural. Use separate public bathing access for swimming.
Sea and coast
Before moving away from shore, identify a safe exit point and do not enter if waves or current exceed your ability.
Families and children
Suitable as a scenic or cultural family stop, but it is not an equipped beach.
Families and children
Before planning the day, consider access, distance from services, crowding and how easy it will be to get back.
Parking and services
Use town parking and services; availability, traffic restrictions and charges may change in summer.
Parking and services
Do not leave valuables visible in the car and do not occupy verges, access points or unauthorised spaces.
Accessibility
The urban approach is easy, but not every final section to the shore or monument is confirmed step-free.
Accessibility
If you have specific mobility needs, check before leaving whether the route is genuinely usable that day.
Safety
Respect fences, property and signs; do not climb the structure and do not assume interior access is allowed.
Safety
If signs or barriers on site are more restrictive than this guide, the instructions on site always take precedence.
Update
The lighthouse tower reopened after restoration in 2024 and is entrusted to the local Italian Naval League section. Events in 2026 confirm active use, but interior opening and visiting hours should be checked first.
Update
Check the date of the notice: a temporary measure should not be interpreted as a permanent rule.
