Torre San Giovanni

One of Ugento’s main seaside resorts, with a long sandy coast, a rocky stretch, the harbour and the former coastal tower converted into a lighthouse.

Six kilometres of coast between rocks and sand

Torre San Giovanni lies on the Ionian coast of the municipality of Ugento, between Posto Rosso to the north and Fontanelle to the south.

The lighthouse marks two distinct landscapes: to the north the low rocky coast of Mare Verde, and to the south the long sandy beach continuing into the Litorale di Ugento Regional Natural Park.

The coast and beaches

The regional source describes Torre San Giovanni beach as one of the longest shorelines in southern Salento, with about six kilometres of fine sand.

The coast alternates free stretches and beach establishments. North of the town, in the Mare Verde area, the shore is instead low and rocky.

The tower converted into a lighthouse

The coastal tower was commissioned in the 16th century as a defensive outpost against raids.

The structure was later converted into a lighthouse to assist navigation around the shallows off the coast.

Harbour and natural park

Beside the town lies the small harbour of Torre San Giovanni, a reference point for local boating.

The southern sandy stretch lies within the Litorale di Ugento Regional Natural Park, established in 2007 to protect dunes, scrub, coastal basins and other coastal environments.
