Grotta Verde: practical information before you go
The key question is not only how beautiful it is. To choose it well, you need practical facts: where to leave the car, how the descent works, how much swimming is involved, whether it suits children, what services are nearby and when rough sea means you should give it a miss.
Public rocky access, not a sandy beach
Grotta Verde is a sea cave at Marina della Torre, on the rocky Marina di Andrano coastline. Puglia’s tourism portal and the regional park list it among the marina’s main bathing spots, but it should not be imagined as a sandy beach or an equipped beach club.
Choose it for
Swimming, the cave, snorkelling and rocky scenery. If you want sand, a very easy water entry and plenty of room for beach equipment, another spot will suit you better.
There is a Grotta Verde car park close to the coast
ParkingMyCar lists “Parcheggio Grotta Verde” among the paid parking areas in Andrano and Marina di Andrano. This gives visitors a defined place to leave the car rather than relying on improvised roadside parking.
Charges and rules
We do not publish a price that may soon be out of date: check signs, the parking meter or the active payment app on the day. In July and August, arriving early remains the most practical option.
From the cliff to the cave: steps, rock, then water
A detailed description of the route mentions a short stepped path on the rocks leading to an outer chamber open to the sea. From there, the more impressive inner cave is reached through the water; the source describes roughly twenty metres to swim.
Not simply a walk-in cave
Expect to get wet and swim. With a high or rough sea, the same passage can become much more demanding than it is on a calm day.
Rocky seabed: do not assume you can stand throughout
The coast and footholds are rocky, and reaching the inner cave involves swimming. Grotta Verde should therefore not be presented as a uniformly shallow natural pool: depth and footing vary along the route.
For a safer entry
Move slowly, watch where you place your feet and treat confident swimming ability as important if you want to experience the cave properly.
Families: there is an easier choice in the same marina
The regional tourism page specifically says families favour La Botte because of its shallow water. Grotta Verde instead involves rock, water passages and greater confidence in swimming.
With young children
If shallow water and easier management matter most, compare La Botte first. Enter the cave here only with children who can swim, in calm conditions and with an adult staying very close.
Parking and refreshments are nearby, but this is not a beach club
Sources describe a parking area and refreshment points a short distance from the cave, and the dedicated car park is still listed among the marina’s paid parking areas. On the rocks themselves, however, do not expect the continuous facilities of an equipped beach.
Do not rely on opening times
Bring your own water and essentials for the swim. Bars and kiosks may operate seasonally or change their hours from year to year.
The green reflections are best on bright mornings
The emerald effect comes from sunlight entering the cave and refracting through the water. The most detailed descriptions point to bright summer mornings as generally the best time for stronger green and turquoise tones.
No magic exact time
Morning is the safer recommendation, but there is no guaranteed hour: season, cloud, sun angle and sea conditions all change the effect.
Sea and weather conditions come first
With significant waves, a sea cave can become uncomfortable and dangerous. On 21 January 2026, during a weather alert, the Municipality of Andrano temporarily closed Lungomare delle Agavi to vehicles and pedestrians, expressly including the Grotta Verde area.
Practical rule
With rough sea, an alert or an official closure, skip the cave. Always follow signs, ordinances and instructions on site, even if other swimmers choose to enter.
Snorkelling is one of the best reasons to come
Mask and fins are recommended in detailed access descriptions because they help you see the rocky seabed and marine life while reaching the inner cave. The same source warns inexperienced visitors against trying the submerged passage towards the open sea.
Avoid
Do not turn the visit into breath-hold or underwater exploration unless you have specific experience. For most visitors, staying on the surface is enough.
The cave is compact, so crowds are felt quickly
The inner space and water passages are naturally limited. Sources favour mornings and, where possible, periods before the biggest tourist flows; in peak summer even a modest increase in visitors changes the experience noticeably.
To enjoy it more
Early morning usually means less pressure at the entrance, easier parking and more favourable light.
Accessibility: this is not a step-free bathing access
Steps, uneven rock and the need to enter the water make the cave unsuitable for many visitors with reduced mobility. We found no official certification describing Grotta Verde as an adapted or barrier-free bathing access.
Specific mobility needs
It is better to check with the municipality or choose another bathing point in the marina before attempting the descent.
For younger visitors: great for swimming and photos, not beach nightlife
Grotta Verde mainly appeals to people who want to swim, snorkel and photograph the cave’s reflections. It is not an organised beach with music, loungers and large spaces for spending the whole day.
Best way to use the stop
Treat it as a natural swimming stop, then use the rest of Marina di Andrano for an aperitif, a promenade or an evening out.
Recommended for
Confident swimmers, couples, younger travellers, photographers and snorkellers who enjoy the rocky Salento coast and want to see a distinctive sea cave without booking a boat.
Strong point
It works very well as a few-hour experience or a stop along Puglia’s Adriatic coast, rather than as a classic full day on a sandy beach.
Less suitable for
Non-swimmers, anyone looking for sand, permanently shallow water, pushchair-friendly access or an easy route with reduced mobility. It is also awkward if you want to carry lots of beach equipment.
Nearby alternative
For children and an easier water entry, the regional tourism source points to La Botte as the marina area with shallow water preferred by families.
What to bring
Rock shoes, a mask, optional fins, water, sunscreen, a hat, a light towel and a waterproof phone or camera case. A small backpack is far more useful than bulky beach gear.
The two most useful items
Rock shoes for the shore and a mask for the water make a real difference. Do not swim in carrying objects that stop you using your hands properly.
