The beach and dune system
The coastline of Specchiarica includes broad stretches of fine sand and retains long sections of free beach. At several access points, reaching the sea means crossing the dune system that accompanies this part of the Ionian coast.
The dunes are dotted with Mediterranean scrub and are an important part of the local landscape. Their presence clearly separates the natural area behind the coast from the sandy shore itself.
Specchiarica and the coast towards the Chidro
The Puglia Region identifies Specchiarica within the coastal sector east of the mouth of the Chidro River. The river mouth is one of the most distinctive natural features of the Manduria coastline and marks the transition towards the coast extending in the direction of Borraco.
This position places Specchiarica within a continuous coastal strip with San Pietro in Bevagna, while it retains its own territorial name, also recognised in official documents issued by the municipality of Manduria.
A place name rooted in the rural landscape
The name Specchiarica does not belong only to the modern seaside locality. Historical records mention Masseria Specchiarica as early as the seventeenth century and show that the place name was used for this rural area close to the coast.
Historical sources mention the masseria in 1611 and again in later centuries. The present-day seaside locality therefore preserves a name that long predates the tourist and residential development of the coastline.
