Porto Grande Beach at Baia delle Orte in Otranto
Puglia · Salento · Adriatic Sea · Otranto

Porto Grande Beach

A wild, mainly rocky stretch of Baia delle Orte reached on foot, with clear water, good snorkelling potential in calm conditions and very few facilities directly on the coast.

Porto Grande: what to know before you go

The old description captured the wild character well, but two details should no longer be treated as fixed: the old €3 parking fee is not currently verified, and sea access is not simple in every condition.

Not a sandy beach: mainly rocky coast

Porto Grande is a small part of Baia delle Orte dominated by low rock, rocky shelves and small inlets. Regional sources describe the wider bay as wild and reached by paths.

Choose it if

You want sea, rock and nature rather than sand and beach-club comfort.

Final access is on foot through the Orte area

The last section follows paths and tracks. The Regional Park documents a coastal trail network linking Otranto, Baia delle Orte, the bauxite quarry and Cape Otranto.

Footwear

Closed shoes or light walking shoes are better than flip-flops for the approach.

Parking: do not rely on the old €3 fee

The legacy page quoted €3 for a full day, but we found no current reliable source confirming that price. Parking in Otranto is regulated and conditions should be checked locally.

Practical rule

Use authorised parking only and do not drive along restricted tracks.

Rocky seabed suited to snorkelling in calm water

Clear water and rocky ground can make Porto Grande rewarding with a mask, but the entry is uneven and may be slippery.

Before entering

Choose an easy entry and exit point and wear rock shoes.

Open Adriatic: waves make rock access harder

Wind and waves can make getting in, getting out and standing on wet rock significantly more difficult.

When to skip it

If waves are breaking hard on the rocks or the return route is doubtful, stay out of the water.

Families: not the easiest choice with small children

Walking access, rocks, lack of continuous sand and an uneven water entry make Porto Grande less practical than a sandy beach.

With children

Choose another beach if you need a pushchair-friendly route, shallow sandy entry and nearby facilities.

Facilities are not guaranteed at the free rocky shore

Treat Porto Grande as a natural spot. We found no reliable confirmation of toilets, showers, rentals or staffed services directly at the access point.

Come prepared

Bring water, light food and everything you need, and take all rubbish away.

Accessibility is limited by paths and rock

We found no dedicated step-free bathing access for Porto Grande. Natural tracks and rocky surfaces can be difficult for reduced mobility.

Alternative

Use the accessible bathing points explicitly listed by the Municipality of Otranto.

Best for

Confident swimmers, snorkellers in calm conditions, walkers, couples and visitors looking for a less urbanised coast.

Main appeal

The walk, the rocks and the sea are part of the same experience.

What to bring

Walking shoes, rock shoes, plenty of water, hat, sun protection, mask and a charged phone.

In summer

Keep the bag reasonably light for the walk back in the heat.

Frequently asked questions about Porto Grande Beach

Practical answers on access, parking, rocks, children, snorkelling and services.

Is Porto Grande a sandy beach?
No. Despite the name, it is mainly a rocky stretch of Baia delle Orte with small inlets and sea-access points.
How do I reach it?
The final section is on foot along paths and tracks in the Orte area. Follow existing routes and local signs.
Does parking still cost €3?
We cannot confirm it. That price came from the old page; charges and management can change.
Is it suitable for children?
It is not one of the easiest options for small children because of the walk, rocks and uneven entry.
Can I snorkel there?
Yes in suitable calm conditions, but choose a safe entry and avoid the water if wind or waves make the return difficult.
Do I need rock shoes?
They are strongly recommended for foot protection and grip on wet rock.
Are there toilets and a bar?
Do not assume facilities are available directly at Porto Grande; bring water and what you need.
Is it wheelchair accessible?
We found no dedicated step-free bathing route; natural paths and rocks limit accessibility.
Is it quiet?
The walking approach often reduces crowds compared with urban beaches, but quiet cannot be guaranteed in peak season.
What should I bring?
Walking shoes, rock shoes, water, hat, sunscreen, mask and a charged phone.
