Grotte dell’Orte lie in the limestone cliffs south of Otranto near Masseria dell’Orte. Speleomarine research documents many submerged and semi-submerged cavities in this sector, shaped by coastal karst and marine erosion.
Treat this first as a natural cliff site, not as a normal swimming beach.
The area is reached along the Orte nature trails. The upper route is easier, while the lower trail towards Punta Palascia is graded EE, on exposed rock and at times narrow and demanding.
Do not improvise descents down the cliff to reach the cave entrance.
The Italian Navy Portolano continues to list restrictions between Grotta Palombara and Grotta delle Orte and along the Baia delle Orte cliff because of rockfall risk. Rules may cover swimming, navigation, stopping, anchoring and diving.
Always check current ordinances and signs. A sea entrance does not mean approaching or entering is permitted.
The coast is rocky and the water can deepen quickly. This karstic marine environment has walls, fractures and cavities rather than the regular seabed of a sandy beach.
Not suitable if you need shallow, even water.
This is not convenient for pushchairs, reduced mobility or small children: the setting is trail, rock and cliff, with no equipped bathing access at the caves.
The Municipality lists accessible bathing points elsewhere on the Otranto coast, not here.
Leave the car in regular parking areas and continue on foot. Municipal paid parking operates seasonally, and special vehicle restrictions may apply in wooded and scrub areas.
Do not drive onto tracks or through scrub just to get closer to the coast.
This is a natural stretch outside the town. Do not rely on bars, toilets, showers, shade or assistance at the cliff.
Carry enough drinking water.
Clear water and rocky seabed may be appealing, but safety comes first here. We do not recommend swimming to the cave or entering cavities without first checking active restrictions.
If a safety strip is closed because of rockfall risk, stay outside even in calm seas.

Anyone looking for sand, parasols, shallow water, direct car access, services, easy pushchair access or a cave that can be entered freely by swimming.
For a comfortable beach day, use an equipped beach around Otranto.
Walking shoes with good grip, water, hat, sun protection and a charged phone. If you are only sightseeing, heavy beach gear is unnecessary.
Avoid flip-flops on exposed rocky sections.
