The old page was right about access by sea but over-emphasised cliff diving. This updated guide separates an organised boat visit from improvised swimming or cliff access and uses data published by the City of Castro tourism portal.
Grotta Azzurra is a small sea cave on Castro’s coast, a few hundred metres from Grotta Zinzulusa. There is no beach in front of it and no ordinary pedestrian access from the cliffs.
Plan it as a boat excursion, not as a day on an equipped beach.
The City of Castro tourism portal explicitly states that Grotta Azzurra can only be reached by sea. For visitors, the simplest option is an organised boat trip from Castro.
Confirm the boarding point, duration, sea conditions and the actual approach to the cave with the operator.
Visit Castro reports an average water depth of about 15 metres inside the cave and a height of about 7 metres above the water surface.
It is not suitable for anyone looking for a shallow seabed or a gradual entry into the sea.
On sunny days, light entering the cave and reflecting off the walls creates the cobalt-blue reflections that give the cave its name.
Colour and intensity vary with the light, time of day and sea conditions.
The old page encouraged diving from the rocky coast. We do not retain that advice here: Grotta Azzurra has no normal land access and the water is deep.
Follow the skipper’s instructions and do not improvise cliff access or an independent swim to the cave.
Because the cave is accessible only by sea, wind, waves and navigation safety directly affect whether a boat can approach or enter.
The boat operator should make the final call on whether the visit is feasible.
The cave can be enjoyable for families on an appropriate boat, but it offers no beach, shallow water or land area where you can stop.

There is no land route to the cave. For visitors with reduced mobility, accessibility depends on the boarding point and vessel; we found no official guarantee of universal access.

Do not assume swimming inside the cave is included or allowed; it depends on the tour and conditions.
