Grotta Azzurra

A small sea cave a few hundred metres from Zinzulusa, reachable only by sea and known for the cobalt-blue reflections created by sunlight in the water.

Grotta Azzurra: what to know before you go

The old page was right about access by sea but over-emphasised cliff diving. This updated guide separates an organised boat visit from improvised swimming or cliff access and uses data published by the City of Castro tourism portal.

Sea cave, not a beach

Grotta Azzurra is a small sea cave on Castro’s coast, a few hundred metres from Grotta Zinzulusa. There is no beach in front of it and no ordinary pedestrian access from the cliffs.

Good to know

Plan it as a boat excursion, not as a day on an equipped beach.

Reached only by sea

The City of Castro tourism portal explicitly states that Grotta Azzurra can only be reached by sea. For visitors, the simplest option is an organised boat trip from Castro.

Before you go

Confirm the boarding point, duration, sea conditions and the actual approach to the cave with the operator.

Deep water: about 15 m on average

Visit Castro reports an average water depth of about 15 metres inside the cave and a height of about 7 metres above the water surface.

Not shallow water

It is not suitable for anyone looking for a shallow seabed or a gradual entry into the sea.

The blue depends on the light

On sunny days, light entering the cave and reflecting off the walls creates the cobalt-blue reflections that give the cave its name.

A changing experience

Colour and intensity vary with the light, time of day and sea conditions.

Do not plan cliff diving

The old page encouraged diving from the rocky coast. We do not retain that advice here: Grotta Azzurra has no normal land access and the water is deep.

Safer choice

Follow the skipper’s instructions and do not improvise cliff access or an independent swim to the cave.

The visit depends on sea conditions

Because the cave is accessible only by sea, wind, waves and navigation safety directly affect whether a boat can approach or enter.

Pick the right day

The boat operator should make the final call on whether the visit is feasible.

With children: choose a suitable tour

The cave can be enjoyable for families on an appropriate boat, but it offers no beach, shallow water or land area where you can stop.

With young children

Ask the operator in advance about equipment, boarding arrangements and age suitability.

Accessibility depends on the boat

There is no land route to the cave. For visitors with reduced mobility, accessibility depends on the boarding point and vessel; we found no official guarantee of universal access.

Check first

Contact the boat operator directly before booking.

Park in Castro, then walk to the boarding point

The cave has no parking. Use legal parking in Castro Marina and confirm the exact departure point of your boat trip with the operator.

High season

Allow extra time to park and walk to the boat.

What to bring

Sun protection, a hat, water, a waterproof phone case and a light layer against wind and spray. Bring swim gear only if your tour includes a swimming stop.

Essential

Do not assume swimming inside the cave is included or allowed; it depends on the tour and conditions.

Where Grotta Azzurra in Castro is

The pin marks the cave entrance on Castro’s coast. OpenStreetMap gives 40.0101601, 18.4307677; the cave itself remains accessible only from the sea.

Coordinates: 40.0101601, 18.4307677
