Grotta Palombara sea cave on the Castro coast in Salento

Grotta Palombara

A large sea cave south of Castro, known for pigeons nesting in the limestone walls and for an entrance that resembles a tied curtain when seen from inside.

Grotta Palombara: what to know before you go

The key correction concerns access: an official short trail reaches the cliff above the cave, not its interior. Visiting the cavity itself is part of Castro’s coastal sea itinerary.

Sea cave, not a beach

Grotta Palombara is a large sea cave south of Castro. Visit Castro describes it as about 75 m long, 18 m wide and 30 m high, with sea depth of about 10 m.

Good to know

Treat it as a coastal and boating experience, not as a conventional beach day.

To enter the cave: go by sea

Castro’s official caves itinerary includes Palombara among the coastal caves reached from the Port of Castro or the Zinzulusa area.

Practical choice

For most visitors an organised boat trip is the safest option; check sea conditions and approach arrangements first.

The land trail ends above the cave

The Palombara / Fishermen’s Trail is about 191 m long and ends on the limestone cliff above the cave. It is not a land entrance into the cavity.

Important

Do not confuse the panoramic trail with a route down into the cave.

Large cavity and deep water

The City of Castro source gives approximate dimensions of 75 × 18 × 30 m and sea depth of about 10 m.

Not shallow

This is not suitable for anyone looking for a gentle entry or shallow water.

Geological origin

The cave lies at the bottom of a large coastal niche where two major faults intersect and formed through collapse after fracturing of the limestone.

Respect the cave

Do not touch or damage natural formations.

Why it is called Palombara

The name is linked to pigeons, locally called palombi, which nest in limestone cavities where fresh water drips.

Another name

It is also known as the “cave with curtains” because of the shape of its entrance seen from inside.

We do not recommend swimming there from shore

The old page suggested reaching the cave by swimming. This updated guide does not retain that advice: the coast is cliff-like and the official visit is described as part of a sea itinerary.

Safer option

Use a boat operator and follow the skipper’s instructions.

Families: choose a suitable boat

The cave can be interesting for children, but there is no beach, shallow water or land stopping area.

Before booking

Ask about age suitability, life jackets, boarding and trip duration.

Accessibility depends on the boat

The trail ends above the cliff and the cave entrance is from the sea. Accessibility for visitors with reduced mobility therefore depends on the boarding point and vessel.

Check first

Contact the boat operator directly to confirm boarding assistance.

Parking: use Castro Marina as your base

There is no parking at the cave entrance. For a boat trip, use legal parking in Castro and walk to the boarding point given by the operator.

In summer

Allow extra time for parking and walking to the harbour.

What to bring

Water, hat, sunscreen, waterproof phone case and a light layer against wind and spray. Wear comfortable shoes if combining the visit with the panoramic trail.

Essential

Stay on the marked land route and follow the boat operator’s instructions at sea.

Coordinates: 40.0051698, 18.4305377

The triangular entrance, limestone walls and contrast between shade and open sea are its most recognisable features.
